Lessons learned from Don Allado

By Al S. Mendoza

I only have pity for Don Allado.

My heart sank after learning of what he’d done.

No sane person would have done what he’d done.

What Don Allado did was like hearing Manny Pacquiao say, “I lost to Timothy Bradley.”

Or, like hearing Timothy Bradley tell the world, “Hey, I honestly feel I defeated Manny Pacquiao.”

It just wouldn’t hold water, fellers.

And what did Don Allado do again to incur the ire of the basketball republic?

What did Don Allado do that got the goat of Chito Salud, the commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)?

Don Allado said that PBA games are fixed and, because of that, “there is no more credibility left in the league.”

He also said teams that are in and that are out of the championship picture are manipulated.

In short, he said that the PBA is a factory of lies, deceit and machinations.

There would have been no problem if Don Allado said those things in private, like when he was in a drinking session.  Sober or not, he’d have gotten away with crime.

There would have no crime at all, to begin with.

This is a free country.

In a private meeting, everything’s free, including one’s penchant to utter silly things.

What burned Don Allado was, he made his comments on his tweeter account.

Everybody now knows what a tweet is.

No, it’s not the bird’s tweet, you dummy.

A tweet today is a comment you make on any computer that is carried through the internet and read by the entire world, from Manila to Manchuria.

Mess with it and your life could be in a mess.

You don’t fool around with a tweet, or you get it in the neck.

That’s the lesson learned by Don Allado.

He was banned from playing in the PBA’s third and last conference.

He was fined P500,000, P300,000 of which would go to the PBA Players Trust Fund and the remaining P200,000 to any charitable work of Allado’s choice.

Allado has apologized for his misdeed – profusely at that.

Let’s forgive him.  Everybody deserves a second chance.

Anyway, I have always believed that some of the most common persons that inhabit this world are these three:

First, a person that talks and thinks at the same time.

Second, a person that thinks first before talking.

And third, a person that talks first before thinking.

The three are categorized as genius, practical and stupid – in that order.

Where will you categorize Don Allado?

Keep your answer to yourself, please.

I know already.
