Smooth Interpersonal Relationships

FILIPINOS are mostly friendly and respectful.  As they converse, we notice that they address people, especially the elderly, “Sir” or “Ma’am.”  To them,

“SIR” stands for Smooth Interpersonal Relationships. Courtesy is usually expressed in such terms as “Lolo, Lola, Kuya, and Ate.”

“Bayanihan” (helping one another or making heroes of each other) is still a common practice especially in rural communities.  People also show their “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) by reciprocating those who helped them. It is “nakakahiya” (shameful) when they fail to reciprocate those who give them favors.

Created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27), we are supposed to demonstrate “SIR” always.  Psalm 133:1 tells us: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity.”  And Proverbs 3:27 admonish us: “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.”

Smooth interpersonal relationships are best demonstrated when we are forgiving and understanding toward each other.  As Yazid Ibrahim advised,

“When looking at faults, use a mirror, not a telescope.”
