OFWs share honors with Azkals

By Al S. Mendoza

THERE is euphoria once more across the archipelago.

No, not that P-Noy has survived one year in office.

Nor, did Leila de Lima get past the wrath of the people over her bumbling of the Vizconde Massacre, when she combined with the NBI to reveal an alleged slew of new, but alas invisible, witnesses that would incredibly pin down Hubert Webb’s alibi that he was in the US when the 1991 murders happened.

P-Noy continues to reel under the pressure of his promise to put the country back to the “matuwid na daan (correct path).”

Hunger, unemployment and houseless-ness pervade the land.  Not to mention that corruption still seems to be the norm of life among many bureaus, agencies and other government functionaries.

As I said at the start of P-Noy’s reign: Good luck.

And I say, more luck to P-Noy.

As to Leila de Lima, why still the need for her to call that presscon on the Vizconde Massacre, almost saying, again, that Webb might not really be off the hook in contrary to the Supreme Court decision of December 14 acquitting Webb et al. of the murders?

What was she up to?

You are the Justice secretary and you can do such a thing as a totally useless exercise – useless because it would amount to nothing, anyway?

Spectacularly bizarre, indeed!

Any new proof or evidence one presents in a bid to link Webb et al. again to that 20-year-old tragedy, it won’t matter anymore under the rule of double jeopardy – a Constitutional right that frees anyone acquitted by the Supreme Court of a crime from a new prosecution/new trial.

Well, I shouldn’t be surprised anymore, actually, for it was also De Lima who ignored a court ruling lifting the arrest order recently on Sen. Lacson.

Strike two already that, if I were P-Noy, I think it’s time, almost, to replace De Lima.

Anyway, back to that euphoria thing.

I refer to the Azkals’ 4-0 swamping of Sri Lanka that pushed the Philippines for the first time to the second round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

While Manny Pacquiao is on a break from his heroic boxing exploits, here come the Azkals providing another robust reason for national rejoicing.

In their next match, the Mizuno-backed Azkals face a tough customer in Kuwait on July 23 in Kuwait and on July 28 in Manila.

But I believe they’d do just as well against the Kuwaitis since the Azkals, coached by a German, are built to bulldoze the opposition.

It is to be emphatically noted that many of the stars in the team are Fil-Europeans and we should be proud of them, if only to highlight the fact that many of the Fil-Europeans – if not all of them – are sons of OFWs.

Indeed, our OFWs are our new heroes.

In fact, the Azkals are a happy bunch giving P-Noy all the luck in his somewhat floundering, if not failing, administration.

Here’s a glass to our OFWs.
