Finally it’s done

By Jesus A. Garcia, Jr.

HOPEFULLY 2011 will really be a prosperous year for all of us. Like many Filipinos, I hope that the incessant bickering and conflict between and among our national sports leaders will finally come to an end (especially in my favorite sport cycling sector). More importantly, that P-Noy would deliver on his promise to end the economic crisis in our midst. Surveys says that nine out of ten are confident that the 50 year-old president of this country will be much better than the previous one. But please don’t expect much from him. Remember, he inherited a bankrupt government marked by gigantic social and economic woes that can’t be solved overnight. But yes, “Expect the unexpected” as the saying goes.

As I’ve said before, organizing a bicycle race is really a very difficult chore. It takes a lot to solicit assistance from your friends, relatives or even politicians to help finance the project to make it a successful event. Failing that, one risks a badly managed activity. And this is one of the reasons why the December 19 bikefest that I originally planned on was postponed to December 26. I was fazed by budget and time constraints. Like in the past three years, the bikefest, originally and principally sponsored by then PNP Gen. Leopoldo N. Bataoil, the annual road battle was held to celebrate my natal day with Olongapo City youthful rider Rudy Roque ruling the event. Were it not for the generosity and support of some friends close to my heart, the occasion for sure would not have pushed through. So my big thanks to Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr., my balikbayan amigos Blandino Caguioa and Felipe Movida, Jr. from Houston, Texas and Guam, respectively, Mangaldan hizzoner Herminio Romero and to Engr. Rodolfo “Boy” Dion of DPWH 2nd Engineering District Office in Lingayen and Engr. Ricardo Flores. I hope you guys will keep on supporting sports activities not only in my place but anywhere in the province.

It’s disheartening to note that our local wood pushers did not bag any place in the just concluded two-day 2010 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Rapid Chess Tournament held December 18 and 19 hosted by the Dagupan City government. The event organized by the National Chess Federation headed by former lawmaker Prospero “Butch” Pichay were participated in by 44 players including our local teams from sixth district, Binalonan, Urdaneta City, Alaminos City, San Fabian, Mangaldan and various squads of Dagupan City.
I failed to monitor the tourney’s proceedings because it coincided with my birthday bash but clearly our local bets were not match to the visitors, with De La Salle College of St. Benilde Manila topping the hostilities.

I guess our wood pushers need more tune-up matches before joining games of this magnitude. Chess is a psychological sport and it is imperative that one hones his skills in order to win and not to be humiliated especially in your own turf.
Tsk, tsk, tsk, better luck next time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed Egypt. Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said ”Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go back to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.” Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came back into the land of Israel. Matthew 2: 13-14, 19-21.
