A Kabaleyan Thoughts…

Our leaders need VICE

By S. Bill Jimenez

PEOPLE WONDER why in spite of our advances in civilization due to education, science and technology we still witness boorishness and barbarity in political leadership. Surely, our political leaders need some VICE. I’m not referring to addiction in smoking or drinking or gambling. VICE refers to Virtue, Intelligence, Competence and Education. Our political leaders need them in order to effectively lead our country. When they lack VICE, the people suffer.

Above all, political leaders must have Virtue. Gandhi, the great Indian leader, reminds us: “The obligation of accepting a position of power is to be, above all else, a good human being.” Apostle Paul admonishes the pursuit of “righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:11-12). He also exhorts us to make every effort to add to faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love.

Next is Intelligence. We read in Proverbs: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline….Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding…. A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom….” (1:7; 4:7; 10:23; 14:8-9).

When people ask for political candidates to release their health records, why not their IQ and transcript of records? Political leaders must have higher IQ to govern wisely.

Competence is greatly needed. Competent planning, good strategy and diplomacy will minimize conflicts. It comes from listening to competent advice of rational advisers and from God’s counsel.

Finally, political leaders need Education. Jules Michelet wisely said, “What is the first part of politics? Education. The second? Education. And the third? Education.”  Political leaders are our teachers. They greatly influence our present and eternal destinies. As such, they must continually pursue education.
