3rd INTER-LGU UNITY GAMES 2019 BASKETBALL SEMIFINALS

TITLE favorite Calasiao which enjoys the twice-to-beat advantage for topping the elimination round in Group B of the 3rd Pangasinan Inter-LGU Unity Games 2019, was unable to sustain its supremacy by bowing out anew to the surging Urbiztondo, 78-76, in the Group B semifinals’ “do-or-die” game and was booted out of the championship  on August 1 at Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center gym in Lingayen.

Similar to what happened in their first meeting when the Urbiztondo five edged out Calasiao, 93-91, Urbiztondo early took the upper hand in the first three quarters by precarious margins, 22-20, 39-38 and 59-51 led by its four key players, the brothers Dondon and Jason Mendoza, Noel Manganti and Urbiztondo’s hizzoner Martin Raul Sison, ll.

Calasiao countered in the fourth and final period with 8-0 romp spearheaded by its peppery guard Cris Magno who pumped in 18 points with three treys to make the match thrilling with see-saw scoring nine times to the cheers of the Calasiao crowd. With the score deadlocked at 76-76 all, Manganti converted a two-point clutch basket in the last 27:98 seconds and  Calasiao failed to sink its last penetration try that supposed to tie the score and finally lost by two points.

Urbiztondo will  face Group B first finalist Bugallon while San Carlos City will tangle with Bayambang in Group A finals both to be held on August 9 in the best-of-three series at NRSCC gym starting at 8:30 a.m.

For third place, it will be Sta. Barbara vs Basista (Team A) and Alaminos City vs Calasiao (Team B) both via knockout games on August 8 also to be held at NRSCC. (JAG, Jr.)
