CALASIAO – Flooding in the town will continue because of a still unrepaired dike in Barangay Gabon.

According to Freddie Villacorta, head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO), “the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two phases in the construction of dikes from Barangay Quesban up to Barangay Gabon with a total length of 700 meters.

The construction also covers up river leaks.

“The third phase will be built from Gabon up to Poblacion West”, said Villacorta who added that the project was put on hold because the residents living beside the project still need to be relocated to a resettlement area in Barangay Buenlag.

Eventually, kapag na-vacate na, itutuloy na ng DPWH program”, he added.

However, as residents complained, it’s been a year since the last repair was made.

The Calasiao government has allocated P230 million for flood control projects and only the dike remains to be completed, said Villacorta.

Meanwhile, the Calasiao MDRRMO was placed on blue alert, following the rise of water level in Marusay River – at six feet above normal level.

“We are also anticipating more water from upstream due to rains”, he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
