LINGAYEN–  There are 160,000 sacks of rice stored in warehouses of the National Food Authority (NFA) – Western Pangasinan that are for sale even to non-accredited rice retailers.

This was announced by Chona Maramba, NFAWP Assistant Manager, who said the open house sale has been resorted to because of the ample supply of rice as a result of the  agency’s massive buying of rice from local farmers.

With the removal of exclusivity, even rice mill owners may also procure NFA rice and does not see the sale of rice to non-accredited retailers as a threat to accredited retailers.

Non-accredited retailers may purchase NFA rice at PHP 1,250 per cavan.

Regular milled rice sells for about P28 to P32 per kilo, well-milled rice for P33-P40, while premium milled rice sells at P45. The NFA rice still costs PHP 27.

Maramba assured the public of sufficient supply of NFA rice despite the lean months.

NFA procurement continues, with a purchasing price of PHP 17 to 22 for each kilo of palay. (Ahikam Pasion)
