IN Bayambang town, backyard vegetable gardening will be a major source of livelihood!

This was assured by Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao who said in a press conference Tuesday during the opening of the four-day Science and Technology Caravan of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Aug. 13 that the FIC at the Pangasinan State University (PSU) has been manufacturing different products.

He said all the produce will be bought and processed for value adding at the Food Innovation Center (FIC) in the town for high-end chichirya (junk foods) whose sales are estimated to reach P10-million.

“Next month they will start to mass produce,” Quimbao said. One Food Corporation established here is a private company organized for the backyard gardening venture.

The barangay folks are encouraged to plant in their backyard continuously in order to

supply the needed raw materials, Quiambao said.

“They must plant a lot and continuously so there will be enough to sell,” he said.

Bayambang, known as the Onion Capital of Pangasinan, will have a new market for the new products, like tomatoes will be processed into tomato paste while the squash, okra and onions will be turned into vacuum-fried chips, he said.

He said based on the company’s projection, this year is to have P10-million sales starting in September and every year for the next five years, the venture will earn P200-million. “It’s something big for vegetable producers” he said.

The company is presently using the facilities at the PSU pending construction of a factory in a. 2,000 square-meter lot Barangay Amacosiling Sur next year.

To help barangays in their backyard gardening, the local government will be providing vegetable seeds.

The FIC is also into making calamansi and eggs into powder form. (PhilStar Wire Service)
