SEVEN families were left homeless in a fire that broke out in Sitio Dupax, Bonuan Gueset at about 4:00 a.m. on August 4, where one person was reportedly hurt.

The residents complained that many of their properties could have been saved if the Dagupan City Fire Department had responded swiftly. Oddly, it was the San Fabian Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) that first responded to the fire as residents could not reach the Dagupan BFP located at the old Perez Market Site.

Residents said the Dagupan BFP arrived 30 minutes later when all the six houses were already completely razed to the ground.

The residents said they also failed to alert the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), which has its own fire engine nor the Panda Fire Fighting Brigade of the Filipino-Chinese community.

F/ Chief Inspector Georgean Pascua, Dagupan City Fire Marshal, explained that their late arrival at the scene was due to the fact that it was not their office that was being alerted by the fire victims or their kin.

One of the fire victims said she was not able to save any belonging except the clothes that she and the rest of her family were wearing at the time.

The Dagupan BFP initially traced the fire to the alleged substandard wiring materials used in some of the burnt houses.

The Dagupan BFP is still conducting its investigation as to the exact cause and origin of the fire but nearby residents suspect that the blaze may have started from a gaming shop.

An explosion was also reportedly heard before the houses made of light materials were razed to the ground. The fire lasted two hours.

The Public Information Office Dagupan reported on social media that representatives of the City Social Welfare Office led by Leila Natividad visited the fire victims and extended assistance to them which included food items and used clothing.

Vice Mayor Dean Bryan Kua and Councilor Dennis Canto visited the victims separately and extended food assistance. (Leonardo Micua)
