PNP warns netizens on “click bait”

THE Pangasinan police took the celebration of the 24th Police Community Relations Month as the opportunity to alert Facebook and internet users to be wary of cybercrimes particularly the “click bait” modus.

Click bait, a program designed by hackers to steal a user’s personal information on the internet when the victim unsuspectingly clicks on a link sent by the hackers.

Once the internet user clicks the link, all the user’s photos, conversations, transactions either publicly or privately shared, and passwords will be captured by the hacker to be used for any criminal purpose.

The police cited the case of a Facebook user whose account was hacked on June 6 because of “click-bait”, and he was blackmailed and threatened to spread his private videos and photos if he didn’t pay.

The Pangasinan PNP encouraged would be victims to report instances of hacking so a possible trace can be launched.

Meanwhile, internet users were reminded: “Think before you click.” (Melody Valenton)
