PNHS students exchange trash for school supplies

LINGAYEN — Students at the Pangasinan National High School here exchange their reusable and recyclable trash for school supplies in the schools’ ‘Palit Tayo’ program.

Launched after the school opening, last month, the program aims to instill discipline among the 7,700 students and create higher awareness on the value of waste segregation to protect the environment, according to Al Villanueva, one of the advisers of Ang Baybay Dagat student publication.

Villanueva said empty plastic bottles, paper cups, scrap paper can be exchanged for

ball pens, bond paper, erasers, markers, highlighter, pouch and others, depending on the volume of materials they turn over.

He and two other advisers Rubeline Joy Mararc and Yolanda dela Cruz , of Ang Baybay Dagat were prime movers of the program managed by 20 staff members.

He said the journalism students and teachers, and their parents initially donated the school supplies for the exchange program. The program quickly collected 11 sacks of empty bottles and a half sack of paper. 

The Palit Tayo project will be implemented twice a month.
The collected reusable items will be sold to junk shops and the money earned will

 be used for a feeding project while teaching children the love for reading, Villanueva said.

Donations from residents to keep this program going are welcome, Villanueva said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
