PHO probes maternal death in hospital

LINGAYEN–The Provincial Health Office is currently investigating a death of a pregnant woman in the Western Pangasinan District Hospital who was in the hospital for check-up.

In The PUNCH’s interview with Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, she said Renato Reynaldo Jr. filed a complaint against the hospital after his wife Alma, died during her checkup.

Documents from the hospital stated that she died from pre-eclampsia.

According to medical practitioners, pre-eclampsia is a condition in pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, plus signs of damage to another organ system, usually during the second half of pregnancy (from around 20 weeks), or soon after the baby is delivered.

“We just received the complaint, and we are currently investigating the matter”, said de Guzman.

Excluding the ongoing case, there are currently ten cases of maternal deaths in the province from January until the first week of July this year.

This, however, is lower than the maternal deaths recorded last 2018 of the same period, with 24 deaths.

The PHO reminds pregnant women to regularly undergo pre-natal checkup in order to avoid pregnancy-related complications.

“They should do it monthly. Some complications may arise during the earlier or latter part of pregnancy, and the best way to avoid maternal death is to regularly monitor the mother’s health”, said de Guzman.

She said pre-natal checkup may be done in Barangay Health Centers, and local health offices. (Ahikam Pasion)
