LINGAYEN– The Provincial Employment and Services Office (PESO) admitted to the shortage of construction workers in the country.

PESO Manager Alex Ferrer, in a PUNCH  interview Wednesday, said because of President Rodrigo Duterte’s “Build, Build, Build” Program, demand for construction workers have skyrocketed.

Records from the Department of Trade and Industry-Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP) estimate the need for seven million workers in order to support the government’s relentless construction programs.

This means that annually, more than 30,000 workers must be trained to meet the demand of  government’s and private sector’s requirements, said Ferrer.

Ferrer noted that people coming to PESO to apply for domestic work have dwindled, with most preferring to find work overseas instead.

Majority of those who choose to remain in the country are semi-skilled, lack work to qualify for overseas jobs.

“Sadly, most of these applicants for overseas are highly skilled”, said Ferrer.

To address the shortage, PESO in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), regularly conducts training in towns on carpentry and other related skills. (Ahikam Pasion)
