BAYAMBANG—This agricultural town’s government recently formed the Millennial Farmers Association of Bayambang (MFAB) that targets out-of-school youths and students as members to entice them to get involved in agriculture.

Angelica Andrea Garcia, the town’s focal person for good governance said the first 100 members have started training in a demo-farm in Barangay Hermosa here.

Their training revolves around urban gardening and the use of organic fertilizer.

“We use urban gardening to encourage even those living in urbanized areas to still plant,” Garcia said.

“Many of the youths are no longer interested in agriculture as they see it dirty, messy and hard work, so we want to entice them since our town already uses technologies or mechanization in farming,” she said in an interview.

By engaging the youngsters in agriculture, the Bayambang government teaches them a source of income or livelihood, especially the out of school youths, she added.

The association was started July last year and since then the 16-24 years old members who are provided food and transportation allowance have attended different training on agriculture.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has been requested to provide fish cages since the demo-farm is situated near a river for a lesson in aquaculture. (Helen Martin)
