More job opportunities seen from mobile skills training

LINGAYEN–The provincial government’s a new tact in addressing poverty and unemployment – use of mobile trucks and a bus for skills training –  is reaping rewards.

Alex Ferrer, chief of the Provincial Employment Service Office (POSO) attributed the low rate of unemployment to the strategy, one of the lowest in the country today.

Unemployment rate in Pangasinan was pegged at 5.2 in January and slightly increased to 5.08 in April owing to the big number of fresh college graduates then who were looking for jobs.

Ferrer told the “Talakayan sa Kapitolyo” last week that Gov. Amado Espino III has not stopped using the mobile skills training that was launched in 2017 .

Starting with only one truck, the skills training concentrated on training in carpentry and electrical wiring. Those who completed the training were quickly absorbed by local and overseas employers, while others started their own business.

More trucks have been added since, providing training on masonry, tile setting, and plumbing and construction tasks (scaffolding construction and industrial sewing) to serve the growing demands of the local construction industry which is at present in short supply of workers because of the government’s aggressive “Build, Build, Build” program.

Meanwhile, the skills training bus is giving soft skills like beauty care, cookery and basic hair-cutting attracted women.

Ferrer said Gov. Espino intends to provide two more mobile skills training trucks to ensure that there will be one such truck in each of the six districts of Pangasinan.

To assure jobs for the trainees, PESO brings prospective employers to training sites for a chance to scout for workers.

PESO continues to hold job fairs once a month at the PESO office in Lingayen and weekly job fair-on-wheels in cities and towns that so far already provided employment to over 1,000 trainees this year. (Leonardo Micua)
