LINGAYEN–Gov. Amado Espino III has ordered a localized suspension of classes policy on July 18, a day after 16 towns suspended classes in all levels, 15 others from pre-school to high school and four others for pre-school due to light to moderate rains spurred by the intensified southwest monsoon when Typhoon “Falcon” barreled through extreme Northern Luzon.

In his PDRRMC July 17 memorandum, Espino enjoined the chairpersons of LDRRMCs (Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils) and school administrators to suspend classes in their respective areas of responsibility “if they see the need to do so”.

Although no part of Pangasinan was threatened by the typhoon, it was the intensified monsoon rains that started in the afternoon of July 16, which forced mayors to suspend classes in their respective areas to prevent harm on students and teachers going to and from school on July 17.

There were no classes in all levels in Aguilar, Bani, Binmaley, Bugallon, Burgos, Labrador, Laoac, Mabini, Mapandan, Manaoag, Mangaldan, San Fabian, San Jacinto, Sta. Maria, Sto. Tomas and Urbiztondo.

Classes for pre schools were also suspended in Dagupan, Alaminos and San Carlos cities, Agno, Anda,Binalonan, Calasiao, Dasol, Infanta, Malasiqui, Mangatarem, Sta. Barbara and Sual.

Asingan, Rosales, San Manuel, and San Nicolas suspended classes only in pre-school while Bayambang and Tayug implemented a localized suspension of classes.

Flooding in some barangays of Dagupan was caused as usual by the slow rise of tidal water from .08 meter at 12:06 a.m. that reached its peak at 1.8 meters at 10:56 a.m.

Classes in tertiary level went on among colleges and universities in Dagupan, except at Phinma University of Pangasinan which declared a suspension of classes.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) had reported that there was no abrupt rise in the water level of the Agno and Sinocalan rivers.  (Leonardo Micua)
