Your PUNCH is 63 years old!

WE sure have come a long way since our founder, the late Ermin Erfe-Garcia, gave life to our newspaper in July 1956. Few will now remember how life in Pangasinan was in 1956 through the 70s but we do.

The PUNCH was there throughout to keep a journal of development phases of the province. We were witness to the changes in social and cultural milieu over the decades, the political milestones and the engagements of the many civic sectors in Pangasinan that brought us to where we are today.

While we retained our masthead’s design and print edition, we have since joined the cyber world with our online edition and Facebook account for a more proactive engagement with Pangasinenses wherever they may be in the world.

We never skipped a week’s issue because of a calamity, the martial law or a libel case or because our founder was murdered in 1966.  We plodded through difficulties never forgetting our commitment to provide our province with vital information and updates which are essential to our growth as a people and as a province.

We remain committed to our founder’s chosen mantra – No man is to be reverenced than the Truth, by Socrates.

Our readers and advertisers can rest assure that your Sunday PUNCH will remain free, independent and relevant in providing news and opinion. After all, we need to live up to being Pangasinan’s news and opinion leader for the past 63 years!

Strangers, meddlers

OF course President Duterte is right.  Why must he allow foreign groups to investigate his drug war?  Our business is our own business.  Sovereignty it is called, also known as self-determination—as in we have total control of our own affairs in accordance with established laws and the Constitution.

External forces can always criticize our way with things but for us to let them come to our shores to check whether or not we act accordingly would be totally out of  order.  It’s like allowing strangers to enter your house to assess your style of homemaking.  Who are they to judge your way of living?  Only fools bow to such chicanery.   And, fortunately, Mr. Duterte is no fool as he endlessly exhibits a political will to turn away meddlers.  No wonder satisfaction ratings on his style of governance have consistently remained in record highs.

Admirable.
