THE Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed Ordinance (No. 2173-209) providing new routes for public utility jeepney (PUJ) in Dagupan and identifying those that may traverse thereon during a special session Friday afternoon.

This ordinance also amended Section 3.4 of Ordinance No. 1848-2005, otherwise known as “Modified Day Coding System Ordinance of 2005” and Article V, Section 4 B: of Ordinance   (No. 1748-2002 otherwise known as  “Adopting a Revised Comprehensive and Mandatory Traffic Code in the City of Dagupan and prescribing penalties thereof”.

The ordinance authored by both Councilors Alvin Coquia and Luis Samson Jr. was approved during a special session presided by Councilor Jeslito Seen, presiding Pro Tempore.

The ordinance took note that the Lucao-Pantal corridor has been identified in Ordinance No. 2060-2016 or the Dagupan City Comprehensive Land Use Plan as one of the new growth areas where new job-creating investments are expected to rise.

Numerous establishments there have already sprouted and more enterprises have already began construction of commercial structures along this new economic artery.

The sponsors noted the demand for convenience and comfort of the commuting public by establishing regular routes for public utility jeepneys in this unserved area along the Lucao-Pantal Corridor through the De Venecia Expressway Extension.

The new routes, the ordinance stated, addresses the apparent lack of public transport services in the growing economic corridor which is presently served only by a few motorized tricycles that have recently figured in a spate of road accidents.

To be deployed in the new route are jeepneys observing their two-day coding or rest day that are plying the Bonuan Gueset, Bonuan Boquig and Bonuan Binloc and the eastern barangays of Tambac, Bolosan, Salisay, Mangin, Tebeng and Mamalingling.

During a public hearing at the SP on Thursday, transport leaders will not charge their passengers additional fare for serving the new route along Jose de Venecia Expressway.

To ply the new route will enable PUJ drivers and operators a chance to earn more and promote the business establishments that have already sprouted in the area.

The ordinance was enacted by all members of the SP present except Councilor Redford Erfe-Mejia who objected. (Leonardo Micua)
