Barangay tanod, front-liner

THERE has been a rash of rape and gruesome killings in communities. One cannot but wonder where the members of the barangay security, we know them as tanod, are or have been all these days.

Are there no more tanod patrols of the old, they who enforce curfews, accost and confront residents and strangers roaming streets at night, drinking and singing boisterously in front of houses and sari-sari stores, checking our internet cafes, and even more importantly, escorting lone residents to their homes, etc…

While they are not armed, their visibility 24/7 is a already an effective deterrent to commission of crimes including scandalous domestic spats.

Curiously, law enforcers are left to relying on videos from CCTV cameras installed in some homes to help them track offenders and trouble makers, when it used to be tanods of barangays that are immediately sought to give background information on victims and their attackers.

With the known resurgence of use and trade of illegal drugs in the province, the tanods of each barangay are again looked upon as the front-liners in the war on drugs. Their expected 24/7 patrols should enable them to detect and suspect any and all drug personalities in their communities.

Finally, aren’t the barangay kapitans alarmed at all knowing that one brutal rape and killing of a young girl in one barangay can happen in their own areas?

True leader

TRUE leaders think first before they speak. Pseudo leaders speak first and next think about what they’ve said.  Does President Duterte fit as a true leader?  But, of course! He first weighs things thoroughly before opening his mouth. That’s what he did before going public to address the recent South China Sea mishap involving a Chinese vessel hitting a docked boat carrying Filipino 22 fishermen. He said it was a “maritime accident” and he was glad no one died.  He ignored his critics agitating for virtual retaliation against China. Why trigger a diplomatic tear via a word war over an incident pregnant with repercussions if mishandled incorrectly? Prudence is the better part of valor.  Until the result of a probe hasn’t come, it is best that his lips are sealed.  No need to rush things up.  He knows that haste makes waste.  Only a true leader like Digong knows that by heart.
