‘Betel’ price drops big time due to abundance

BANGUS growers may have to struggle with little profit, after Dagupan bangus, locally known as ‘betel’, dropped prices big time this June.

This, after the Dagupan City Agriculture Office recorded a spike in supply of harvested ‘betel’.

Prices dropped to P110 to P 125 per kilo, depending on its size – a far cry compared to last April’s sales of Php 145 per kilo.

In an interview with agricultural technologist Rolly Dulay, he said bangus growers in the city tend to harvest their bangus during the month of June, resulting in abundance in supply, hence a major price drop.

“This has been the common trend during this season arrives. Fish growers tend to harvest ‘betel’ during the month of June, which is why a surplus is always expected”, said Dulay.

Backed by low demand for ‘betel’ during the rainy season, bangus growers cannot take advantage of their abundant supply, which result in small gains.

The CAO however, expects a major price comeback come holiday season. (Chub Pasion)
