BOLINAO—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has raised red tide alert in the coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda after shellfish samples collected were found positive for red tide toxin.

BFAR Regional Shellfish Advisory No. 01, series of 2019 issued on April 26 signed by Regional Director Lilibeth Signey said “the results of red tide monitoring activities of BFAR and LGU (local government unit) and based on the result of laboratory analysis of BFAR Biotoxin Laboratory using Mouse Bio- Assay Method, shellfish samples collected from coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda in Pangasinan are now positive with the red tide toxin”.

The Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) Level in shellfish sample collected from the two areas ranged from 108-117 μgSTXeq /100 g of shellfish meat.

“To avoid Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, the public is advised to refrain from eating, gathering or harvesting, transporting and marketing shellfish from coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda, until such time that the shellfish toxicity level has gone down below the regulatory limit of 60μgSTXeq/100 g of shellfish meat,” it added.

It, however, clarified that fish harvested from the two towns are still deemed safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly and their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. (PhilStar Wire Service)
