IBP calls for swift probe on lawyer’s gun slay

IBP-Pangasinan called for a swift investigation and resolution of the killing of the lawyer last week in Dagupan City by a still unidentified gunman.

In its statement condoling with the family of slain lawyer Val Crisostomo, chapter president Teodora Cerdan, said their officers and members are calling “for a swift and effective investigation of this senseless violence against a member of the legal profession, and to identify and charge the perpetrators”.

“It is surreal when lawyers themselves end up as victims. The clamor for justice rings ever louder,” it added citing that while they are not tied personally to the legal issues they attend to, “still, lawyers represent the cause of their client professionally, with zeal and determination.”

The local chapter said “it is unfortunate, however, nay, tragic, when the lawyers themselves are regarded as stumbling blocks to the opposing cause, and whose callous elimination is seen as a way of instilling fear upon the party into abandoning their cause.”

“This is anathema to the rule of law,” it added.

Crisostomo, from Manaoag town, was declared dead on arrival at the Region 1 Medical Center.

He had just attended a court hearing and was standing across the Justice Hall when the gunman shot him. (PhilStar Wire Service)
