PNP seizes 120 loose firearms

PANGASINAN police operatives seized 120 illegal guns from January to March 25 this year in their intensified campaign against loose firearms.

P/Capt. Ria Tacderan, public information officer of Pangasinan Police Provincial Office told ‘Tongtongan’ forum of the Philippine Information Agency that the Pangasinan police have conducted 21,000 Oplan Katok knocking on houses of gun holders whose firearms licenses have expired and have not been renewed or updated.

Of this number, about 2, 337 loose firearms have been surrendered as of April 8 to different police stations for safekeeping, she said.

She added that 125 search warrants were served.

Seven illegal guns were seized during police responses to calls while Oplan Bakal operations in bars and nightclubs yielded eight loose firearms, she said.

For drug sting operations, nine illegal guns were recovered, she added.

Those who are no longer interested to renew their gun licenses may donate their firearms to the police stations but the donation goes through a process first before the police can accept the guns.

The gun owner will be asked to explain why he or she no longer wants to renew the gun’s license. She warned that guns with expired licenses cannot not be sold. 

She said there were government officials who were arrested for illegal gun possession and were charged. but she declined to name them. (PhilStar Wire Service)
