LINGAYEN – Governor Amado I. Espino, III exhorted local government unit (LGU) employees to become young Pangasinenses’ role model through sportsmanship.

“Represent your town, your local government unit (LGU) and yourself to show that a public servant is worthy of emulation by the youth,” said Governor Espino during the opening ceremonies of the 3rd Inter-LGU Unity Games on April 11 at the NRSCC Gymnasium.

Saying that sports has a lot of life lessons to share, the governor stressed: “Sana po ay ipakita ninyo sa mga kabataan na ang mga public servants ay marunong rumespeto.”

Governor Espino noted that the provincial government aims to promote healthy living and friendship among government employees around the province through sports.

As such, two sports events, namely: badminton and table tennis will be added to beef up the sportsfest among LGU employees.

“Sa darating na September o October, pakisabihan na po ang ibang coaches niyo na magkakaroon na rin ng table tennis at badminton,” he stated stressing that each sport discipline has three categories: singles for men, singles for women and mixed doubles.

The provincial chief executive also extolled local chief executives for their unwavering support to the unity games since its debut which has unified public servants in Pangasinan.

The governor was joined by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr., and Provincial Administrator Nimrod S. Camba in formally opening the unity games participated in by 18 LGUs around the province.

After the brief ceremony, four teams (2 teams in basketball and 2 teams in volleyball) already faced each other in the sports arena.

In the duel between LGU-Urdaneta City and LGU-Malasiqui in the basketball court, the former took home their first victory with 25-point advantage against the latter, 96-71.

LGU-Alaminos City subdued LGU-Binmaley despite a sluggish start in the first quarter. Cagers from Alaminos City won their first match with a 5-point advantage against Binmaley, 74-69.

In volleyball, LGU-Alaminos City mustered a comeback to defeat last season’s defending champion (division 1), LGU-Sta. Barbara following the point system of the game. The latter earlier ruled first two sets (25-23 and 25-16), but Alaminos City ended their hiatus in the third set and successfully triumphed over Sta. Barbara. Alaminos City has total points of 64 while Sta. Barbara has 61 total points.

LGU-Burgos toppled LGU-Aguilar, last season’s defending champion (division 2) via perfect winning streaks in all three sets of the match – earning 75 points, 23 points higher than their nemesis’ total points of 52. /Shiella Mae C. De Guzman
