Bayambang barangay chairman arrested for drugs

SAN CARLOS CITY– An incumbent barangay chairman in Bayambang town was arrested in a buy-bust operation conducted jointly by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the San Carlos City Police at 11:30 a.m. on May 28 in Barangay San Juan here.

Arrested was Gerald Carugay, 45, incumbent barangay chairman of Langiran in Bayambang.

Seized from him was one sachet of suspected shabu valued at P5,000, the marked money of P1,000 bill and four pieces of boodle P1,000 money which he received from the poseur-buyer, and two foil strips allegedly containing shabu residue.

Also taken from him was one improvised aluminum needle, a lighter, one cellular phone and a gray Toyota Revo, believed owned by him.

He was brought to the PDEA office in Pangasinan for further documentation.

A radio report quoted PDEA Regional Office 1 spokesman Bismark Bengwayan as saying that Carugay had long been placed under surveillance for his drug-dealing activities.

Meanwhile, another buy-bust operation was conducted by joint elements and the San Carlos City police and the PDEA in Barangay Taloy, San Carlos City at about 1:20 a.m. on March 29.

Arrested in that operation was Billy John Garcia, 26, of Barangay Salinap, San Carlos City.

The suspect was arrested after he was caught in the act of selling one heat-sealed transparent plastic sachet of suspected “shabu” to a police officer who acted as poseur buyer.

Recovered from the suspect following his arrest were two heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing suspected shabu and the buy-bust money of P500 bill.

The suspect will be charged for violation of Section 5 and 11 of Republic Act 9165. (Leonardo Micua)
