Balon Dagupan bags 33 gold medals

LAOAG—Defending champion Pangasinan went off to good start when when it captured 33 gold, 24 silver, and 14 bronze medals after just two days of competition in the 2019 Region 1 Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet at the Marcos Stadium here in just its first defense of its title it won last year in Alaminos City.

La Union trails Dagupan with 12 gold, five silver and eight bronze followed by Pangasinan II with 11gold, 11 silver, and four bronze medals. 

Inspired by the presence of Mayor Belen Fernandez during the opening day, Balon Dagupan team seized the early initiative by registering separate victories in swimming, archery, athletics, gymnastics and arnis to earn their first seven gold medals.

Janelle Frances Alisa T. Lin gave Dagupan its first gold in the 400-meter freestyle while teammate Jessiely Grace Umali bagged another gold in 100-meter backstroke in secondary girls’ swimming competition.

Archer Jared Sua starred for the Balon Dagupan when he accounted for two gold medals, then Jacquilyn Balisim topped in the elementary girls athletics, followed by the victories of Susan Ramadam in secondary girls and her teammate Cyril Perez in her own running event.

The other Dagupan gold medals were earned in gymnastics and in arnis through the efforts of Mark Angelo Fulay and one Fabiana in their respective events.

The silver medals were won by Mari Alexie Adriano in the 200-meter freestyle and the trio of Ma. Jesse Lou Cacapit, Krisma Marinas and Jessiley Grace Umaly in the swimming’s relay event.

Sua’s teammate in archery, Jason Feliciano, bagged the silver and the bronze while Shane Verly Anne Solem snatched the silver in athletics elementary girls, and Jayvee Santos in elementary boys.

The 2019 R1AA opened with an elaborate ceremony on March 6 and will draw to a close on March 11.  

The opening of the meet was delayed for four days due to apprehensions against the spread of measles among the athletes, according to Edilberto Abalos, sports coordinator of DepEd Region 1. (Leonardo Micua)
