LAOAC–Green Atom Renewable Energy Corporation (GAREC) is bent on pursuing its P4-billion worth waste-to-energy (WTE) power plant in Sitio Mercado, Barangay Inmanduyan here that will be capable of producing six-12 megawatts of electricity from about 600 tons of residual solid wastes per day.

GAREC chairman Luizo Ticman said the company’s commitment to the people of Laoac, and the national government through the Department of Energy “is to push through with the project”.

Ticman said he hopes the people will see the benefits of the project based on the concerns raised during the eight public hearings already conducted as required for the issuance of an Environmental Compliance Certificate and other permits needed.

This WTE project will use a modern thermal decomposition technology with Total Air Quality Control System, the project description said.

“There will be no pollution of the bodies of water, no pollution in the air, no pollution of the aquifer, “Ticman said. “We are not blind or deaf to their concerns and that is part of our commitment silently and openly to address them,” he added.

Aside from taxes and employment benefits, GAREC said the project will ensure high garbage collection efficiency, systematic and environment-friendly waste disposal process and will eradicate ground, air and water pollution brought about by the usual, old and customary dumping of garbage.

It will also help prevent floods, epidemics and other community problems brought about by improper wastes disposal, the brief said.

GAREC president Rex Recarro, said the WTE Project is already equipped with the needed contracts, permits, clearances and licenses, ie., the Biomass Renewable Energy Operating Contract with the Department of Energy, Environmental Compliance Certificate with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Provincial Development Council Resolution, among others.

Laoac Mayor Silverio Alarcio Jr. said the project is sure to push through, despite few oppositions “because majority already approved it and it’s not 100 percent that needs to approve it”.

“The ball is now in the hands of Green Atom,” he added. (PhilStar Wire Service)
