SOLID WASTES IN SEA KILL DOLPHIN

ALAMINOS CITY— The worsening pollution of the sea has taken another victim.

This time the blind rough-toothed dolphin rescued in the coastal waters of Tobuan, Labrador on Dec. 22 last year died on Jan. 22 and cause of death were the wastes it ingested.

Report from Elino Victorio of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Regional Office 1 (BFAR-RO1) said a necropsy made on the dolphin showed dolphin had swallowed a polyvinyl chloride wire, a lighter, a filter bag and plastic pouch of vinegar.

Before it died, it vomited some indigestible materials.

It was initially treated at a BFAR facility in Lucap Wharf here and was later transferred to Cariaz Island as it needed a bigger space. It measured 2.3 meters long.

It was initially named Carol as fishery officials thought it was a girl. But subsequent tests with the help of Ocean Adventure veterinarians who helped in its transfer to Cariaz Island found out it was a male and was thus renamed as Carlo.

It was buried at Camantiles Island at the Hundred Islands in Alaminos.(PhilStar Wire Service)
