THE increasing supply of rice in Pangasinan is finally seeing a downward trend in the  price of rice in retail stores.

From the continuous  dispersal operations of National Food Authority (NFA), the NFA’s outside market stores in barangays sell rice at P27 per kilo while P32 a kilo in all NFA retail stores in markets. Commercial rice is now down to P38-P44, from P50.

Chona Maramba, NFA Assistant Manager of NFA Western Pangasinan said, there are 6,063 bags of NFA rice available today in the warehouses of NFA and will continue to increase from the continuous dispersal operations from the NFA region to warehouses in the province,  on top of the harvest of local farmers.

NFA opened last week additional accredited retail stores in the island barangays of Lomboy, Calmay, Salapingao and Pugaro, all in Dagupan City bringing the total of completed supply to 309 outside and inside retail stores of NFA.

The retail store for the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in the province also opened.

Maramba said, per order of Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol to NFA, there will are reforms being implemented in the rice market, among them P3.70 incentive per kilo to the usual P17 price of dry and clean palay or a total of P20.70 per kilo of palay and NFA can now buy palay from local traders.

“Makakabili na kami, kasi nagtaas na ng bili ang NFA, di tulad nang dati na hindi kami makabili ng palay sa ating farmers kasi maganda ang presyo na iniaalok ng ating mga private traders,” Maramba said.

Meanwhile, DA said farmers harvested 17.6 metric tons in 2016, 19.28 metric tons in 2017 (the first harvest under the Duterte administration),  and 19 million metric tons harvest in 2018 despite 400 metric loss because of Typhoon  Ompong. (Nora Dominguez)
