TO the beat of her campaign jingle that she personally composed, Mayor Belen Fernandez and members of her Team Balon Dagupan filed their Certificates of Candidacy (CoC) at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 15) before the City Elections Office amid chants of “Isa Pa (One More Time) of her green-shirted supporters.

After an early morning mass at the Dagupan City Metropolitan Cathedral celebrated by Fr. Alvin Platon, parish priest, re-electionist Fernandez, her running-mate Dean Bryan Kua and eight candidates for councilors, waded through their sea of supporters.

Five candidates of Balon Dagupan team for the Sangguniang Panlungsod are re-electionists, namely: Luis Samson Jr. Guillermo Vallejos, Jose Netu Tamayo, Dennis Canto and Marvin Fabia, while two are former councilors: Michael Fernandez and Karlos Liberato Reyna IV. Caranglaan Barangay Captain Teresa Coquia completes the ticket.

The team filed under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.

Former Leyte Congressman Martin Romualdez, Lakas CMD national president, came to Dagupan on Oct. 15 to swear in Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, Mayor Fernandez and her fellow candidates to the party.

Lakas-CMD was founded in Dagupan City in the early 1990s by then Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr., father of Christopher; Raul Manglapus and then presidential candidate Fidel Ramos.

The last two candidates who filed their CoCs on the last day were Alfredo Dawana and Jonathan Calimlim.

Meanwhile, what surprised the Balon Dagupan Team was to learn that it was not former Councilor Alfie Fernandez who filed as running-mate of mayoralty candidate, Vice Mayor Marc Brian Lim as earlier reported, but Alfie’s son, Carlos Serafin Alipio Fernandez.

The Lim-Fernandez team under the banner of the Nacionalista Party (NP) was also accompanied by their blue-shirted supporters who first gathered at Metro Plaza and moved in frontline of city hall and Zamora street after the Fernandez-Kua supporters had left.

The NP candidates for councilor are incumbent Councilor Nicanor Aquino, former Councilor Librada Reyna, Maria Lourdes Fernandez, Cisco Flores, Robert Erfe Mejia, Ricardo Mejia, Teddy Villamil Jr. and Maximo Alexis Tan. (Leonardo Micua)
