FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia returned to Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for his re-election bid after he was sworn into the party.

De Venecia, formerly with the Liberal Party, took his oath as a member of Lakas-CMD before former Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, the party president.

“I’m very thrilled. This is a new chapter of my career in public service,” De Venecia said. “It feels like a homecoming in a way as I grew up campaigning for those running under then Lakas-NUCD-UMDP with the thumbs up sign,” he added.

“Now I’m running with that very same party that my dad started so it feels like a homecoming and it is also a continuation of the legacy,” De Venecia said as he pointed out that running under the banner of Lakas-CMD is as his way of paying tribute to his father, who founded the party with former Foreign Affairs secretary Raul Manglapus and former President Fidel V. Ramos.

He added that the time is ripe to rebuild the party again and bring it back to its prominence. “Lakas-CMD was able to produce two presidents and it is just an exciting adventure to be part of,” the re-electionist congressman said.

De Venecia was joined by her parents, five-time House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr and two-time Representative Gina de Venecia and Mayor Belen Fernandez’s Balon Dagupan slate when they trooped to the Commission on Elections provincial office to file his COC.

The young De Venecia said before he joined Lakas-CMD, he met with Liberal Party stalwarts like Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Vice President Leni Robredo about his decision to join Lakas-CMD.

He said they understood his plight and wished him good luck.

Romualdez said he accompanied the young De Venecia in filing his re-election bid because it was in Dagupan City “where Lakas-CMD was founded under the aegis and auspices of then-Speaker Jose de Venecia, FVR and Manglapus and ably guided by Manay Gina de Venecia”.

“So Congressman Christopher is a proud addition (to Lakas-CMD),” Romualdez said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
