CALASIAO—The 3rd Regional Evacuation Center for Region 1 of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) worth P36-million was inaugurated on Sept. 7.
DPWH Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, executive director and OCD administrator who was guest of honor and speaker, said it is the first regional evacuation center built in Pangasinan.
The center has a two-storey building that can accommodate 550 persons. It has a separate building for laundry with shower rooms and comfort rooms, a generator room, garbage disposal facility and another building by the OCD/Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
The other two regional evacuation centers were earlier constructed in Bacnotan in La Union and in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
All regions already have their regional evacuation centers starting in 2016, Jalad said, adding that it is continuing. He said the funds are sourced from DPWH budget.
After the inauguration of the project built on a lot owned by the municipal government in Barangay Poblacion East here, it was turned over to the local government unit for maintenance.
As a regional center, other nearby towns can use the facility during calamities, he stressed.
For his part, Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon said, “This is a blessing and now we can cater to bigger number of evacuees from nearby towns. We’re lucky to have this one great asset.”
Vice Mayor Mahadeva Das Mesina said the center will serve the town’s 24 barangays which were recently flooded in the past two months due to monsoon rains. (With PhilStar wire service report)
