THE 155 members of different Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (BADAC) in the city attended the strengthening seminar and training at the city museum on September 5 sponsored by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) – Regional Office.

Conducted by DILG Provincial Office, the training was attended by members of BADACs comprising of Punong Barangays, Kagawads on Peace and Order, Chief Tanods and representatives of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).

The seminar reinforced the concepts behind their respective roles in clearing illegal drugs in the city as well as, in strengthening their respective roles to further protect their communities from illegal drugs.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Provincial Officer Dexter Asayco discussed the overview of the illegal drug problem in both national and local contexts.

P/Supt. Jandale Sulit of PNP Dagupan tackled the roles of first responders in crime scenes and citizen’s arrests as well as the drug clearing programs in barangays.

Meanwhile, DILG City Director Melinda Buada also discussed the history, functions and legal bases of BADACs.

DILG also facilitated several workshops on strategies, interventions, and local solutions to the drug problem in the city.  Members were also assisted in formulating a BADAC Plan of Action  to be implemented by each council.

Buada underscored the need to strengthen the anti-drug abuse councils in barangays as they serve as first line of defense in leading the fight against illegal drugs.

“These trainings are actually being held simultaneously in cities and municipalities in Pangasinan,” added Buada.

Buada also disclosed that the regularly conducted Community-Based Rehabilitation Programs is one measure to clear out drugs in the city.

Meanwhile, Liga ng mga Barangay President Bryan Kua said the training will be beneficial to all barangays as BADACs are instrumental in clearing out illegal drugs in the city.

(Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
