WHILE PRICE MAY INCREASE

WITH barely two weeks before the holidays, the Dagupan City Agriculture Office (CAO) assures the public of stable supply of the ‘Dagupan Bangus’ variety.

In an interview with City agriculturist Patrick Dizon last week, he said there’s no reason for consumers to be concerned about short supply due to increased demand during the holidays.

“We assure everyone the supply of Dagupan Bangus will not be affected”, he said.

According to CAO records, the daily average of Dagupan Bangus being sold in markets is 4.5 metric tons and can easily increase up to almost double the volume during the holidays.

However, he said household should expect fluctuation in price as demand rises.

Last week Dagupan Bangus was being sold for P140 to P150 per kilogram (wholesale), and around P10 to P 15 for retail. For the following weeks, price may increase by around P5 to P10.

While bangus supply remains ample, harvesting, delivery, and shipping is another story, he added.  He said the final price is also determined by delivery or shipment.

CAO enforcers and the City Market Division have been deployed in all city markets to ensure that vendors do not take advantage of unsuspecting customers.

Despite the increase and fluctuation in price, Dizon said the quality of Dagupan Bangus remains the same, despite the onset of cold weather which affects sizes of the fish.=

The rise in demand specially during the holidays is evidence that quality of Dagupan Bangus does not diminish despite colder weather.

Meanwhile, Dizon said the impact of El Niño phenomenon in 2024’s first quarter will not greatly affect the supply of Dagupan Bangus

Additional measures have been taken to provide proper irrigation for the fish to survive to survive the forecasted drought. (Ahikam Pasion)
