IT pays for an OFW to be listed and employed through legitimate process because of the protection that the government can provide.

Take the case of the family of an OFW from Barangay Gueset in Bugallon who returned home but later reportedly died from wounds inflicted on her by her employer in Jeddah.

Justice may still remain elusive for their daughter Rowena Ibasan, 29-year old OFW who died last July 21 due to infection of the cuts and bruises she suffered in the hands of her employer but government rushed help to her family upon learning of the family’s distressed situation.

Thanks to Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil who sounded off the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA) who were not aware of her situation, rushed to assist the family.

According Rowena’s mother, Zenaida, representatives of DOLE and OWWA rushed to their aid to provide the initial financial support the family needs on account of Rowena’s sudden demise.

The social and financial benefits due the family were outlined to her by OWWA while DOLE assured the family that the government will seek to blacklist the foreign employment agency while demanding the remittance of unpaid salaries due Rowena.

Rowena left last December 2017 to work as a house worker in Jedda, and came home last July 11 with cuts and bruises, and soon died from the infection of her wounds ten days later. (Nora Dominguez)
