TO mitigate the effects of flash floods in western Pangasinan, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and the office of 1st District Rep. Jesus Celeste will put up a district nursery to support the massive seedling propagation and tree planting projects.

Celeste launched the project with the help Department of the Environment and Natural Resources to put up a district nursery for the propagation of seedlings of trees to be planted in the upland and lowland of Infanta, Dasol, Mabini, Burgos, Agno, Bani, Bolinao, Anda, Agno and Alaminos City.

PENRO Officer Raymundo Gayo said the proposed district nursery is timely for the sustainability project of the national greening program and one of the priorities of President Rodrigo Duterte.

In his State of the Nation Address last week, Mr. Duterte called for the need to do more to protect the environment and made local government units accountable for any degradation of the environment.

Gayo said the planned nursery can be expected to further promote the planting of more narra, banaba and acacia trees that have high survival rates.

To further support the district nursery, Celeste and PENRO will set up a nursery in each town.

Gayo said while the national greening program is already on it’s 6th year, there is still a need to strengthen the program by seeking a complete stop to the practice of kaingin that kills the vegetation project on the greening program.

The trees planted in the greening program take ten years before it can help mitigate the effects of flash flood.

For the short term, Gayo recommended the construction of a check dam or water impounding area at the foot of the mountain to catch the rain water from the mountains to avoid flash flood during rainy days. (Nora Dominguez)
