Prices of goods hiked by only 5-10 percent–DTI

PRICES of basic and prime commodities in Pangasinan increased by just five to 10 percent despite the TRAIN Law, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial office reported on July 19.

DTI Provincial Director Peter Mangabat said that groceries and supermarkets already increased prices of manufactured goods when the TRAIN law took effect in January and is confident they have not made any further increases.

He said the prices of canned goods seldom increased in the past, adding that this only happened in January when the TRAIN law took effect but the increase was only by five to 10 percent.

This figure, he explained, was based on the monitoring conducted by DTI on groceries and supermarkets in Pangasinan selling manufactured goods like sardines, milk and other canned goods, which include sugar, cooking oil, detergents and others.

Mangabat said DTI requires groceries and supermarket to post the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of specific goods and if the store owners sell these beyond the SRP, they would be investigated.

So far, no owner of groceries or supermarkets in Pangasinan was reported to have sold goods beyond the SRPs, he added.

DTI regularly monitors prices to protect the consumers.

Mangabat clarified that sari-sari stores, which buy from groceries and supermarkets are not required to put up SRPs on their goods. (Leonardo Micua)
