PNP operations vs. tambays to continue

By July 2, 2018Headlines, News

THERE will be no let-up in the operation against street loiterers or “tambays” during ungodly hours of the night till the wee hours in Pangasinan but this will no longer be known as Oplan Rody but simply intensified enforcement of local ordinances.

This was stressed by P/Sr. Superintendent Wilson Lopez, officer-in-charge at the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) even as he pointed out that the operation has not grounded to a halt and, in fact, is continued every night.

Lopez, citing the report of P/Chief Inspector Norman Florentino, chief of the police community relations, said the operations against street loiterers or “tambays” has succeeded in reducing crimes.

However, he said this operation is no longer known as Oplan Rody and is now simply just about enforcement of local laws or ordinances.

Florentino clarified that so far 860 tambays in the province were invited not arrested since June 13 this year.

Tuloy-tuloy po ito gabi-gabi. May nagre-report na mga police stations po natin on their accomplishments,” said Lopez.

He said the operation will continue because it is a strong deterrent against crimes.

Nagkaroon lang po ng kunting pagbabago because of the change of terminology, Lopez said.

Florentino revealed during the KBP forum that 27 of the 48 towns and cities in Pangasinan have laws or ordinances that slap fines to loiterers and those drinking and smoking in public, committing acts of vandalism and loitering in the streets, half-naked and others.

In Dagupan City, he said, the city police under P/Superintendent. Jandale Sulit used the city’s Artikulo 21 as basis for its crackdown against street loiterers.

Lopez said those who know they did not commit any violation need not worry if they are accosted by the police.

He admitted that not all street loiters are violators and may just be in the streets in pursuit of their jobs which they can readily explain to policemen who have been instructed to use sound judgment in such situations. (Leonardo Micua )
