No local official admits feeling threatened

LINGAYEN—Despite concerns expressed by some local officials over the rash of killings in some parts of the country, no local executive in Pangasinan has so far asked for additional police security nor admitted he or she received death threats.

This was confirmed on Wednesday by P/Chief Inspector Norman Florentino, chief of the police community relations of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO), as he reiterated the offer of OIC-Police Provincial Director Wilson Lopez that the Pangasinan Police is ready to secure mayors who may request it.

Florentino said the offer to provide additional police security, however, is limited to trips or social engagements outside the jurisdiction of the requesting official and an official written request is made for it.

He said Lopez has been calling mayors to ask them personally if they have concerns and would need additional police security for an event or trip.

Lopez earlier said he has instructions to chiefs of police to extend at least two uniformed personnel to boost the security of mayors in their respective engagements but so far not one has indicated any problem or need for additional security.

Meanwhile, Florentino said the police have intensified efforts in applying for search warrants for houses of persons suspected to be keeping unlicensed firearms to preempt the operation of any guns-for-hire group in the province.

So far, nine persons were arrested in simultaneous implementation of search warrants by the police in several towns of Pangasinan last week. (Leonardo Micua)
