Malasiqui cops planted rice, suffered backaches, had fun

PULIS GOOD DEEDS

MALASIQUI— Residents of Barangay Lokeb Este this town may have been initially unnerved by the presence of some 20 policemen in their community last Thursday morning.

These were the police personnel at the Malasiqui Police Station who were on a break from their work schedule who proceeded directly to the barangay to plant rice in a farm lot in their uniform T-shirt.

P/Superintendent Franklin Ortiz, town police chief, said the weather cleared and gave the station’s personnel to proceed with the plan to plant rice in a lot owned by Pastor Tirso Bulatao, a member of Malasiqui Advisory Council.

“Planting rice is never fun as the song goes but we had fun doing it,” Ortiz said.

The policemen-cum-farmers wore their blue t-shirt with “PULIS” printed at the back and blue short pants (also their search-and-rescue uniform) while planting palay seeds.

“It was difficult but fun at the same time,” he said, adding that everyone had to stop after most began experiencing backaches after a long period of stooping to plant.

“But that hardship paid off as we put in our heart into what we were doing… inspired to plant because like in life, you know you have something to reap if you planted something,” he said.

“Indeed, it felt good and we would like to salute our farmers because without them, we would not have food to eat,” Ortiz added.

The police station decided to plant rice in observance of their 23rd Police Community Relations month celebration for its “Pulis Good Deeds”, helping and working with the farmers.

It was the first time for the town’s policemen to do work in a rice farm.

After planting rice for two hours, the policemen enjoyed a boodle fight meal for lunch. They share grilled bangus, steamed camote tops, boiled okra dipped in fish sauce and calamansi spice with chili pepper. (Eva Visperas)
