Dead 50-year-old pawikan beached in Tondaligan

AS tropical depression Josie spawned heavy rains in Pangasinan and other areas on July 22, an Olive Ridley turtle (pawikan), estimated to be 50 years old, beached dead in a coastal area in Dagupan City.

Westly Rosario, center chief of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center in Barangay Bonuan Binloc here, said the police based in Tondaligan Beach, Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City phoned him about the recovered dead pawikan.

He said the pawikan was buried at the Center’s Fish Cemetery on Sunday.

The dead pawikan measured 60 centimeters in length and has a carapace of 60 cms, Rosario said.

It weighed 20 kilograms.

It was named Josie as a remembrance of the typhoon. (Eva Visperas)
