GAWAD KALASAG AWARD

BARANGAY Malued in Dagupan City has been selected as one of two barangays in Region 1 that will vie for the coveted 20th Gawad KALASAG Award.

Malued is the only barangay in the city chosen as one of the contenders for the national award. Barangay San Gabriel of La Union is the other regional entry.

Gawad Kalasag (Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan) is an annual event organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) which aims to recognize individuals, local councils and organizations with outstanding contributions in the field of disaster risk reduction.

Punong Barangay Filipina Delos Santos of Barangay Malued said the accomplishments in the barangay were noted after Malued Elementary School won in an eco-friendly competition.

“They saw that our barangay has many innovations,” said Delos Santos.

GK regional focal person Mark Madusog said Malued’s efforts in prioritizing safety and disaster management despite being one of the flood-prone areas in the city, made the barangay a top contender for the national award.

“Malued has many projects and initiatives that focus on disaster management and also help save lives. At kahit na flood-prone ang barangay nila, hindi nila pinapabayaan ang mga tao doon.” said Madusog.

An evaluation of Barangay Malued was held on July 8-10. (CIO/VdV)
