SISON—A coin-toss broke the tie between two barangay chairmen vying for the post of a president of Liga ng Barangay of the town.

And Carlito Queriones, 63, barangay captain of Killo, emerged as the winner and earned for him his third term as Liga ng Barangay president of this town here and sit as municipal councilor in an ex-officio capacity at the Sangguniang Bayan.

Queriones served as barangay captain from 1989 up to 2007. He ran and won as barangay kagawad when he was succeeded by his wife in 2007 up to 2010. In 2010, he won again as barangay captain up to present and became Liga ng Barangay president twice during that period.

He is now in his third term as Liga president after he defeated Richard Denver Dely of Barangay Labayug in three rounds of a coin-toss to break the tie.

Both Queriones and Dely earlier got 14 votes each from their fellow barangay captains. Sison has 28 barangays.

Queriones’ vice president, Cornelio Domaloy of Barangay Agat, also got 14 votes but Dely’s vice president, Alex Dispo of Barangay Esperanza, got the same number of votes that resulted also in a tie.

His team for the board of directors of their Liga got 13 votes each.

Queriones said first tie that was settled was for the vice president which was won by Dispo.

The Board of Canvassers used a P1 coin.

He said he chose to bank on ‘cruz’ on remembering the cross inside the Church when he heard Mass prior to the election and won 2-1 in the three-round toss.

Queriones said he and Dely hugged each other after he was proclaimed the winner.

After he won, he appealed in his closing speech for unity and to support the programs of the mayor for the progress of their municipality.

All the towns and cities across the country simultaneously held the election for their respective Liga ng Barangay officers on July 16.

On July 30, the municipal Liga presidents will elect their federated provincial Liga ng Barangay president in a synchronized election in the country per province. (Eva Visperas)
