Chess prodigy shines in ASEAN chessfest

LINGAYEN – A 16-year-old chess wizard, a product of the Pangasinan Chess Festival (PCF), brought honors and prestige to Pangasinan by winning in the 19thAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Age Group Chess Championship held June 18-23.

Maycydel Fajardo presented her medals to Gov. Amado Espino III on July 9 at the Urduja House.

Fajardo won the silver medal in the team standard category (Girls, 18 Under division) and the bronze medal in individual blitz category (Girls 18 Under division).

“You are a source of inspiration to your fellow youth,” Espino told Fajardo, as he vowed to expand the sports programs of the provincial administration for young Pangasinenses.

Fajardo recounted to the governor her early years of joining the PCF chess clinics, and chess tournaments.

“Sa provincial government chess clinics, and chess tournaments ko mas napaghusay ang aking kagalingan sa paglalaro ng chess,” said Fajardo. She topped the under 18 category of the 2016 Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championships held here.

The PCF, launched by former governor and now 5th District Rep. Amado Espino Jr. in 2007 as a grassroots development program.

Fajardo was accompanied by her mother, and the executive committee members of the Provincial Sports Development and Management council led by Director Modesto Operania, and representatives from the Pangasinan Chess League. (PIO/MGNO)
