PHO issues alert on dengue, diarrhea, leptospirosis

THE Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) has issued an alert over the rising cases of dengue, diarrhea and leptospirosis with the onset of the rainy season.

A surveillance update from PHO as of June 18 this year already showed 1,470 reported cases of dengue, which is 116% higher than the 679 cases last June 2017. Six have died of dengue this year.

The towns and cities presently in PHO watch list are Urdaneta City (187), Bayambang (85), Binmaley (84), Alaminos City (78), Lingayen (75), Mangaldan (69), San Carlos City (67), Asingan (64), Pozorrubio (59) and Sta. Maria (53).

PHO’s Dr. Ceilo Almoite reminded households to regularly check their surroundings of possible breeding sites of the dengue carrying mosquitoes and to seek early consultation if early symptoms of dengue have appeared on family members.

Meanwhile, while cases of diarrhea in the province this year is 33% lower compared to 2017 data, out of 3,699 reported cases of diarrhea, 22 have died as of June 2018.

The towns and cities in PHO watch list are San Carlos City (284), Calasiao (236), Bayambang (187), Umingan (187), Malasiqui (185), Lingayen (171), Mangaldan (160), Sta. Barbara (145), Binmaley (129), and San Fabian (119).

To protect themselves, Almoite said, households should boil or disinfect their drinking water to avoid gastroenteritis or use hydro chloride solution which is available in the government clinics to prevent gastroenteritis.

PHO also confirmed that 47 cases have been reported and seven already died.

To avoid it, households are advised to avoid wading through flood water or use protection like boots and immediately seek medical advised and avoid self medication. (Nora Dominguez)
