Dagupan braces for flood

SEVERAL barangays in Dagupan City were underwater Friday morning, June 15, following heavy rains triggered by Typhoon “Ester” in the eastern part of the country on the tail of a long monsoon rain and aggravated by high tide in the coastal waters from past 12:00 midnight to 11:30 a.m.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) was on 24/7 alert status since June 13 as floodwaters in Barangays Malued, Pogo Grande, Pogo Chico, Lasip Chico, Bacayao Sur, Bacayao Norte, Lucao, Mayombo, Barangay 2 and 3, Barangay 4, Mangin and Pantal have risen.

CDRRMO deputy chief Bernard Cabison told the KBP Forum on Thursday that all their personnel and equipment that include rubber boats, rescue vehicles, as well as dump trucks remain on standby for any evacuation that may have to be undertaken.

Even the premises of the Dagupan City Hall as well as Galvan Street were not spared from the flood while some shops along A.B. Fernandez Avenue were already under water.

Cabison said the residents of Sitio Fisheries in Barangay Malued may have to be evacuated if the level of water further rises.

Flooding was already beginning to be seen in Calasiao as the water level of Marusay River had risen because of the rush of water from upstream.

Cabison said the Gabion type of river revetment of the Pantal River built by the Department of Public Works and Highways along the Pantal river starting from Lasip Chico appeared to have helped minimize the flooding in the southern barangays of the city.

But he said the still uncompleted revetment in Pantal may still bring flood in that village. (Leonardo Micua)
