BOLINAO–The Santiago Island Bridge that will connect seven islands barangays to the mainland here is set to be constructed next year, according to Pangasinan First District Rep. Jesus Celeste.

Celeste said the bridge, about 400 meters long, is estimated to cost about P400-million based on the report by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) engineers who visited the project site.

He added DPWH Sec. Mark Villar approved the requested funding for the project.

He said for the longest period of time, going to Santiago Island composed of seven barangays, namely, Binabalian, Goyoden, Lucero, Pilar, Salud, Dewey and Victory, has been via a barge provided by Celeste.

During Martial Law regime, Celeste said there was a ferry boat.

Meanwhile, he said the plan to make Santiago Island as a separate municipality is still in the pipeline. A seven-hectare lot was already donated by Celeste’s wife for the construction of a town hall, park and cemetery.

Population in the area is already enough to become a separate municipality, the congressman added. (Eva Visperas)
