A REVIVAL of happy childhood play is what’s good for today’s gadget-conscious generation of young children.

This is the goal of a resolution passed by the Dagupan City council requesting the Department of Education (DepEd) to include the playing of various traditional Filipino games in the Physical Education (PE) classes of kindergarten and elementary pupils in both public and private schools.

Authored by Councilor Jeslito Seen, the resolution emphasized the importance of playing “luksong tinik“, “palosebo“, “patintero“, “tsato“, “tumbang preso” and others, all of which were played by the country’s elders in their youth.

Seen, chairman of the council’s committee on culture, cited studies concluding that children today almost always use gadgets to play games, chat, browse or watch movies.

This, the study said, negatively affects children’s mental attitudes and may even cause attention deficit, cognitive delays, impaired learning, increased impulsivity and decrease the ability to self-regulation.

Seen said that while technology brings convenience and versatility to the way people live today, “there is less information about potential health hazards”, particularly without physical interaction among children that the Filipino traditional games that their parents, grandparents and great, great grandparents used to enjoy during their formative years.
