Oldest barangay bet in Dagupan is 86 years old

NO AGE LIMITS IN BARANGAY ELECTIONS

THE oldest candidate in Dagupan City seeking a post in the May 14 barangay elections is Pablo de Asis, 86, who is running for kagawad (councilor) in his Barangay Bonuan Binloc in Dagupan City.

A former policeman and one-time close security of former speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., De Asis was a former kagawad himself of the same Barangay Bonuan Binloc in 1997, during the the first term of office of the incumbent Barangay Captain Pedro Gonzales.

De Asis did not win is reelection bid. He said he decided to stage a comeback as kagawad to continue his service to the barangay.

Gonzales, meanwhile, is on his fourth term as barangay chairman of Bonuan Binloc.

De Asis said he will prove to the village residents that an 86-year-old man like him can still be very active and can serve them well.

When De Asis retired from the police, De Venecia still kept him as one of his security officers because of his experience in handling police work and for having a close rapport with the residents where the former speaker resides.

De Asis proved he has more stamina left when he participated in the April 27 “unity walk” with the other candidates in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections. (Leonardo Micua)
